Heads of Government Meeting - CHOGM
Every two years, Commonwealth leaders meet for a few
days to discuss global and Commonwealth issues, and
to agree collective policies and initiatives. These
summits provide a unique forum for consultation at the
highest level of government. They are organised by the
host nation in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Meetings of associated committees usually take place
in the weeks preceeding CHOGM. These include the Committee
of the Whole, which consists of senior officials. The
Commonwealth Ministers' Action Group on the Harare Declaration
and the Ministerial Group on Small States may also meet.
Their recommendations are considered at CHOGM.
Parallel special events involving non-government organisations,
business and youth now coincide with each CHOGM. Action
plans are developed at these events to complement official
Commonwealth statements.
The most recent CHOGM was held in Valletta, Malta,
from 25 to 27 November 2005.
CHOGM 2007
The next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)
will be held in Kampala, Uganda from 23-25 November
2007. The theme for the meeting is ‘Transforming
Commonwealth Societies to achieve political, economic
and human development’.
