TOWNS
| ENTEBBE
Located
on the shore of Lake Victoria near the capital city of
Kampala, is Entebbe town. ‘Entebbe’ in the
local Luganda language, means a ‘seat’ and
this has its historical connotations. History tells us
that this is where Buganda chiefs sat to adjudicate legal
cases.
Its other historical importance can be explained by the
fact that it first became a British colonial administrative
and commercial centre in 1893 when Sir Gerald Portal,
a colonial Commissioner, used it as a base. Port Bell
went on to become Kampala’s harbour and later on
first capital city.
Entebbe is also the home of the country major airport,
Entebbe International Airport which was constructed in
1947.
Other attractions you’ll find here is the zoo, which
has changed names to the Entebbe Wildlife Centre, Entebbe
Sailing Club, the cricket grounds, and a number of beaches.
