There's
so much going on, but we've got it all covered...
TRAVEL
OPTIONS
There
may not be an abundance of choice when it comes to getting
around in Uganda, but there certainly isn't a dearth of
it. Whether your taste is for public or private means,
you will eb well catered for. Uganda's fairly navigable
road network is served by minibuses, buses, cabs, even
boda boda... Minibuses (commonly
referred to as taxis) represent the most popular way to
get around, and often also the cheapest.
Minisbuses dominate routes within the capital city Kampala,
as well adjacent towns. Although taxis ply up country
routes as well, buses remain the safer and more relaible
option. Kampala does not have a city bus service. Fares
on city routes range from between 300 to 1700 Uganda Shillings
($0.3 to $1), although it is common for these to double
as traffic jams consume city roads during rush hours.
And when that happens, jumping on a boda boda
might not be such a bad idea. The boda boda is
a "motorbike taxi", one that can take you anywhere,
and just about anytime. But you must be warned, you need
a heart of steel to ride on a boda boda, as scary
sometimes doesn't even start to describe a boda boda
ride...
If the previous option has already freaked you out, well,
no need to fret:the capital has lots of cabs that can
be made available without much ado, and a host of reputable
car rentals provide vehicles for hire at affordable rates,
starting from $25 dollars for a self-drive car.
Air transport
Nonetheless, you are not limited to road transport. There
is fairly well developed air transport system, with all
major towns accessible by air. However, the country has
only one international airport, which is located at Entebbe.
Currently 13 towns have aerodromes and these are; Arua,
Gulu, Kasese, Kidepo, Soroti and Mbarara, Pakuba, Masindi,
Jinja, Lira, Moroto, Tororo and Kisoro. Please note that
the aerodromes are not equipped to handle night activity.
